Cute cats...I prefer dogs though. Like this one...

The Maremma Sheepdog, or the Maremmano-Abruzzese...
image

The dogs have been perfectly bred by my ancestors, in the Abruzzo region of Italy high in the Apennines, to protect any animals, mainly sheep but any animal, they are put with. Usually they are put with the animals they protect when they are pups to bond. They are ferocious, fearless and vigilant against any intruders, including bears, but they have a gentle temperament around humans and the animals they are tasked to protect. Down in Australia, in Victoria, there was a problem with foxes and wild dogs preying on endangered penguins. They tried everything to protect the birds, including killing the prey animals, to no avail. Well a chicken farmer, who uses Maremmas to guard his birds from prey animals, talked Australian wildlife officials to try using his dogs, including one named Oddball, to protect the penguins. And it worked!!! In 2 years the colony which numbered as low as 10 birds is back up to over 100. Now wildlife officials from around the world are looking at LGD's (livestock guard dogs), but preferably Maremmas since they are regarded to have the best temperament, to protect other endangered species. Good doggies...you did very good!!!
