The US Open is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. It, and The Open Championship, aka The British Open, are the two championships most coveted in all of golf. For some reason Europeans, and specifically Brits, have struggled to win The US Open despite all their legendary golfers. Last time it happened was by Tony Jacklin in 1970 and before that you have to go back to 1925 to find the second most recent victory by a Brit. This year the US Open was being contested at what is considered the cathedral of US golf, Pebble Beach Golf Links. Past US Open champions when the tourny has been contested at Pebble have included Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Tiger Woods...the best of the best are the ones who seem to be able to prevail at one of the toughest tests of golf in the US. Well an Ulsterman, Graeme McDowell perservered and edged Frenchman Gregory Havret by one stroke to win the US Open by one stroke. McDowell almost didn't play in the tourny. He barely qualified ranked right at the cut-off at 50th in the world. He said if he didn't automatically qualify he wouldn't have tried to play his way in and would have concentrated on getting ready for the next European tour event. I am guessing he is happy he played the US Open registering an historic victory on a legendary course. Congrats and cheers...
But this means an American will have to win the next 5 Open Championships, lol.
